South African Football Association (SAFA) president Danny Jordaan was arrested and charged on Wednesday in connection with allegations of fraud and theft totaling 1.3 million rand ($72,000), police reported

Jordaan is accused of using SAFA resources for personal benefit, charges he denied in a Johannesburg court.
According to a police statement, between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan allegedly utilized SAFA’s resources for unauthorized personal use, including hiring a private security company and a public relations firm without SAFA board approval.
Reports indicate Jordaan, 73, engaged the public relations firm after a South African singer and former lawmaker accused him in 2017 of sexually assaulting her 25 years earlier, allegations he denied.
Police stated that Jordaan’s arrest follows an intensive investigation by the Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit in Johannesburg. Serving as SAFA president since 2013, Jordaan was re-elected for a third term in 2022.
Jordaan was arrested alongside SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo and businessman Trevor Neethling, the head of the communications firm named in the charges. All three defendants have denied the charges and were released on bail.
