French President Emmanuel Macron has slammed US President Donald Trump’s remarks about his marriage as “neither elegant nor up to standard,” following a private lunch in Washington where Trump mocked him and his wife, Brigitte Macron, while imitating a French accent
Arriving in South Korea on Thursday, Macron made clear his displeasure, though he chose not to respond directly to the comments. “So I am not going to respond to them – they do not merit a response,” he told reporters, signaling that he considered the jibe beneath diplomatic consideration.

The incident sparked widespread outrage in France. Yaël Braun-Pivet, president of the National Assembly, criticized Trump for his mockery during discussions on global security.
“Honestly, it’s not up to par… We are currently discussing the future of the world. Right now in Iran, this is having consequences for the lives of millions of people, people are dying on the battlefield, and we have a president who is laughing, who is mocking others,” she said.
Manuel Bompard, national coordinator of the radical left party La France Insoumise, also defended Macron, calling Trump’s comments about the French leader and his wife “absolutely unacceptable.” He added: “You are aware of the extent of my disagreements with the president, but for Donald Trump to speak to him like that and to speak of his wife in such a manner is completely out of line.”
