Tinubu approves N16.7B reconstruction of Mokwa Bridge

President Bola Tinubu has approved N16.7 billion for the urgent reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which was destroyed by severe flooding in May 2025

Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris disclosed this on Saturday in Abakaliki after a joint briefing with the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi. Idris, who is leading a Federal Government delegation on a three-day inspection of projects in the South-East, said the approval demonstrates the administration’s swift response to critical infrastructure needs.

“We want to thank Mr. President and the Minister of Works. We jointly discussed this and approached Mr. President, who graciously approved N16.7 billion to reconstruct the 10-span bridge. It means a lot to the people,” Idris stated in a release signed by his media aide, Rabiu Ibrahim.

He praised Umahi’s prompt action following the disaster, noting that experts were immediately deployed to assess the damage. Idris described the decision to rebuild the bridge as welcome news for the government and people of Niger State.

Umahi, in his remarks, hailed Tinubu as a compassionate and listening leader, adding that the President approved the project without delay. He also revealed that the latest round of infrastructure funding covers all six geo-political zones, including the reconstruction of the washed-away five-span bridge in Wukari, Taraba State; Lokoja Bridge; Afikpo Bridge linking Ebonyi, Abia, and Imo States; Keffi Flyover; Jebba Bridge in Kwara; seven bridges in Edo; and another bridge in Kebbi State.

The Mokwa flood disaster claimed over 150 lives, destroyed 265 buildings, displaced 4,534 people in 458 households, and collapsed five key bridges, including the strategic Goodwill Bridge on the Mokwa-Jaba Road. In June, Vice President Kashim Shettima had announced Tinubu’s earlier approval of ₦2 billion for rebuilding homes affected by the disaster.
