President Bola Tinubu on Thursday hosted Chad’s President, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, at the State House in Abuja during a visit that underscores ongoing diplomatic and security cooperation between both nations
The trip marks Déby’s first official visit to Nigeria since Tinubu attended his inauguration in N’Djamena on May 23, 2024.
Déby, 42, came to power after the de.ath of his father, former President Idriss Déby Itno, who was killed by rebels on April 20, 2021, while leading troops on the frontline.

Following his father’s de.ath, he was named head of a Transitional Military Council, initially promising a return to civilian rule within 18 months. The transition period was later extended, and he was sworn in as transitional president in October 2022 before eventually winning the presidential election in May 2024.
The meeting with Tinubu comes just a week after the Nigerian leader received the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Terrance Drew, making Déby the second foreign leader hosted in Abuja within a short span.
Although official details of their discussions were not disclosed, sources indicated that talks likely centered on regional security, particularly the fight against terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, which includes Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon.
Chad remains a crucial ally in Nigeria’s ongoing battle against Boko Haram and other extremist groups operating within the region.
