Tinubu ranked 3rd most corrupt leader globally by OCCRP

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has been ranked as the third most corrupt leader in the world by the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP)

The ranking followed a global nomination process by OCCRP to spotlight individuals involved in advancing criminal activities and exacerbating poverty. Kenyan President William Ruto topped the list, with former Indonesian President Joko Widodo in second place.

Despite the rankings, the main “Person of the Year” title was awarded to Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s ousted leader, who is currently in exile in Russia.

OCCRP organizers emphasized the significance of public outrage against corruption in shaping the rankings.

Tinubu, 72, was cited for allegedly entrenching a regime of corruption in Nigeria. During his tenure as Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2003, he was accused of amassing substantial wealth for himself and his family.

Since becoming Nigeria’s president in May 2023, Tinubu has faced scrutiny over a multitrillion-naira road project awarded to his son’s company. The controversial Abuja-Calabar route project has raised fears of continued corruption.

Additional controversies include Tinubu’s alleged past as a cocaine dealer in Chicago and accusations of certificate forgery that emerged after his inauguration.

Tinubu has consistently denied all allegations of corruption.
