United States President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose a 25 percent tariff on any country doing business with Iran, escalating pressure on the Iranian government amid the country’s largest protests in decades
Years of Western sanctions have crippled Iran’s economy, triggering high inflation, unemployment, and the collapse of the national currency, the rial. The ongoing protests are largely fueled by these economic hardships, which Iran has struggled to address due to its international isolation.

Iran relies heavily on exports to countries including China, Turkey, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and India, with China alone purchasing roughly 80 percent of its oil. Trump’s latest move raises questions about how these trade partners will respond.
“Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Monday. “This Order is final and conclusive.”
The announcement came without any formal documentation from the White House, and no legal basis for the tariffs was specified.
Trump has previously increased pressure on Iran’s leadership, including threats of military action, in a bid to influence the country’s economic and political behavior.
