The suspects were apprehended during a routine security screening at the custodial centre’s entrance.

Their identities were withheld as investigations were still ongoing.

Confirming the arrest on Wednesday, the Ondo State Controller of the NCoS, Mr Charles Oyewole, said correctional officers discovered about four grammes of suspected Indian hemp concealed inside fresh tomatoes brought into the facility.

Oyewole explained that the substance had been carefully wrapped in a watertight nylon and was allegedly intended for delivery to an inmate before it was intercepted.

He said the attempt was foiled in line with the directive of the Controller-General of Corrections, Mr Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, who has consistently stressed the need for stringent security measures across all custodial facilities nationwide.

Commending the vigilance and professionalism of the officers involved, Oyewole described the arrest as a reflection of the service’s renewed commitment to security and zero tolerance for contraband.

He added that the suspects had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for further investigation and prosecution.

Oyewole warned members of the public, particularly visitors to custodial centres, against engaging in acts capable of compromising the safety and security of correctional facilities.
