A woman in China miraculously survived a 54-hour nightmare of snakes, mosquitoes, and exhaustion after she fell into an abandoned well while on a leisurely hike
According to a report, the hiker, identified by her last name Qin, 48, was out on a stroll through the woods of Quanzhuo, Fujian province, on Sept. 13 when she tumbled into the mouth of the well, the South China Morning Post reported.
Her family was unable to locate her after an initial search and reported her missing on Sept.14 — but it wasn’t until the following day that the Jinjiang Ruitong Blue Sky Emergency Rescue Center was able to locate her using a thermal imaging drone, the report stated.
The detection of a faint cry around 1:45 p.m. led first responders to a weed-shrouded wellhead where Qin had been struggling for over two days without respite.
They found Qin clinging to the slick stone walls of the well, which was populated by non-venomous water snakes that chomped on the hard-bitten survivalist as she fought for her life, according to SCMP.
“There were many moments when I completely broke down in despair,” Qin told the SCMP.
“The bottom of the well was pitch black, swarming with mosquitoes, and even had a few water snakes swimming nearby. I was covered in mosquito bites and was even bitten once on my arm by a water snake. Fortunately, it wasn’t venomous and didn’t cause any serious harm.
“There were countless times I wanted to give up. But then I thought about my 70-year-old mother, my 80-year-old father, and my daughter who just started college. If I left them behind, what would they do?” she told the outlet.
For over two days she held onto a stone in the wall with her hands and used others as a foothold, though she told authorities that her ability to swim and stay afloat was integral to her survival.
After the rescue, Qin was treated for two fractured ribs, a minor collapsed lung, and severe hand injuries.
