The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reiterated that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of law
The commission made the statement following public criticism of Bello’s recent declaration to contest the Kogi Central senatorial seat in 2027.

Bello is currently facing prosecution by the EFCC before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, over allegations of diverting and misappropriating ₦80.2 billion of Kogi State funds during his tenure as governor.
Speaking on Monday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, EFCC Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwuajeren, explained that criminal prosecutions in Nigeria take time, involving the presentation of evidence and witnesses before the court. He emphasized that the determination of guilt or innocence is the sole responsibility of the judiciary, not the EFCC.
“The trial is still ongoing, and we are presenting witnesses and evidence before the court,” Uwuajeren said. “It is not the commission that will decide the matter; it’s the court. All we do is prosecute the charges faithfully and ensure that justice is served for both the prosecution and the defense.”
He further stressed that under the Nigerian Constitution, anyone standing trial is presumed innocent until proven guilty, noting that Bello’s position or influence within his political party is unrelated to the charges against him.
“Yahaya Bello’s party affairs are separate from the case in court. EFCC has no interest in party politics; we are a law enforcement organization focused solely on enforcing the law and prosecuting the charges before the court. Nothing has gone amiss in the handling of this case, and we remain committed to ensuring justice is done,” Uwuajeren added.
The EFCC’s statement comes as the former governor continues to face trial for the alleged diversion of state funds, even as he positions himself for a political comeback in the 2027 elections.
