Around 100 United States military personnel, along with supporting equipment, have arrived at Bauchi Airfield to assist the Nigerian Armed Forces with training, technical support, and intelligence collaboration, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) confirmed on Monday
In a statement, Director of Defence Information Major General Samaila Uba said the deployment follows ongoing defence cooperation between Nigeria and the US, building on recent meetings between military delegations from both countries.
“The arrival of the US personnel is planned and deliberate, based on a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for support in addressing clearly defined military training needs,” the DHQ said.
The partnership is aimed at providing specialized technical expertise to enhance Nigeria’s ability to counter terrorist threats and safeguard vulnerable communities nationwide.
Major General Uba stressed that the US personnel are technical advisers focused solely on training and guidance, not combat operations, and that all activities will be conducted under Nigerian government authority and in coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
The DHQ added that Nigerian troops, alongside US advisers, will engage in joint exercises and intelligence-driven initiatives designed to improve the military’s capacity to detect, counter, and neutralize extremist groups threatening national stability.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to degrading and defeating terrorist organizations that threaten the country’s sovereignty, national security, and the safety of its citizens,” the statement said, assuring the public of transparency and timely updates on the collaboration.
