Deaths from dengue disease have tripled in Peru this year, with over 117 recorded fatalities, compared to 33 in 2023.
The government, led by President Dina Boluarte, declared an emergency to combat the outbreak, intensified by climate change. Dengue symptoms range from mild nausea to severe internal bleeding, particularly risky for infants and pregnant women. Suspected cases surged to 135,000.
Health officials conducted fumigations in Lima’s poor areas, including cemeteries where mosquitoes breed. The Aedes Aegypti mosquito, responsible for dengue, is spreading to new regions due to climate shifts.
University of Lima epidemiologist Augusto Tarazona warns of a critical situation, with Peru facing higher infection and mortality rates than Brazil or Argentina. Tarazona attributes this to the mosquito adapting and reproducing faster in warmer climates.
