Tragedy has struck the family of 19-year-old Timilehin Faith Opesusi, who died by s3icide after reportedly being distraught over her score in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
According to The Guardian, the teenager ingested rodent poison on Monday at her residence in Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State, where she lived with her older sister. Opesusi, originally from Abeokuta, Ogun State, had scored 190 in the just-released UTME results—lower than her previous attempt last year. She had applied to study Microbiology.
“She said her result last year was better than this year’s,” a close friend told The Guardian. Neighbours described Opesusi as a “gentle and humble” young woman.
The situation escalated when she asked for palm oil at her sister’s workplace, complaining of internal discomfort. Alarmed, her sister raised the alarm, drawing the attention of those nearby. On their way to the hospital, Opesusi reportedly confessed that she had ingested poison at home before coming to the office.
Despite efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead at Kolak Hospital in Odogunyan.
In a heartbreaking twist, just 30 minutes after her passing, an email notification arrived in her Gmail inbox offering her provisional admission into a university programme.
Her grieving parents travelled to Ikorodu after receiving the devastating news and took her body back to Abeokuta for burial.
Local residents, still reeling from the tragedy, voiced frustration at JAMB, blaming the board for what many perceived as unusually low scores in the 2025 UTME. The incident has renewed calls for mental health awareness and support systems for students facing academic pressure.
