Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai on Monday dismissed circulating claims that he had endorsed a specific region of Nigeria to produce the country’s president in 2027
Through a post on his verified Facebook page, El-Rufai labelled the reports as “fake news,” insisting he had never made such statements in any speech, interview, or social media post.
He stressed that his opinions should only be linked to him when shared on his official social media accounts or through recognised media outlets.
He also cautioned against misrepresenting opinion articles from other authors that he may share, saying such actions distort national discourse.
“These caveats are crucial as we confront both irresponsible politicking and the deliberate misuse of social media for spreading fake news,” El-Rufai wrote.
He criticised media platforms and senior editors for failing to verify information before publishing, describing this as fueling the “unedifying olympics of fiction and fakery” on social media.
“The wilful attribution to me of claims I did not make by a fake news platform is no excuse to treat such platforms with any seriousness,” he added, urging society to prioritise accuracy in reporting.
El-Rufai concluded by emphasising the need to verify information before sharing, especially in an era rife with misinformation and deliberate falsehoods.
