A Greek footballer has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a game where no defibrillator or ambulance were present at the stadium.

Alexandros Lampis collapsed during a game on Wednesday at the First Municipal Stadium.

The venue is situated in a south-eastern suburb of Athens, the country’s capital, but an ambulance did not arrive for 20 minutes according to The Sun.

The 21-year-old was representing Ilioupoli, who play in the third tier of Greek football, before the incident occurred after five minutes.

The match against Ermionida was abandoned following the traumatic incident.

Ilioupoli wrote on the club website: “Our Aleko, our friend, our brother, you left so unjustly. The whole team, the whole city is mourning today.
“The words do not come out… only an unbearable pain and a knot in the stomach. Have a good trip Alecara.”
