5 Bulgarians arrested for £54 million fra*d

A gang of five Bulgarians has been caught in what authorities are calling Britain’s largest-ever benefits fraud, pocketing nearly £54 million through thousands of fake ID claims.5 Bulgarians arrested for £54 million fra*d

Their operation spanned four-and-a-half years, operating from three locations in north London.

The gang set up fake identities and made around 6,000 fraudulent Universal Credit claims. They operated from seemingly legitimate businesses, including a corner shop in Wood Green, where they posted photos on social media appearing to run a regular supermarket.

Investigators found £750,000 in cash stuffed in suitcases, along with hundreds of forged documents and over 900 digital devices. The group used the benefits system to fund lavish lifestyles, buying designer clothes, watches, and luxury cars. They flaunted their ill-gotten gains on social media, posting pictures of expensive vacations and spa breaks.

The gang, comprising Galina Nikolova, Stoyan Stoyanov, Tsvetka Todorova, Gyunesh Ali, and Patritsia Paneva, pleaded guilty to various charges. Their conviction marks the largest benefit fraud prosecution in England and Wales.5 Bulgarians arrested for £54 million fra*d

Their fraudulent activities involved forging documents like tenancy agreements and payslips to make claims. If a claim was rejected, they persisted until it was approved.

The criminals were arrested in May 2021, with one member fleeing to Bulgaria but later extradited. They will be sentenced on May 28. Prosecutors described the scheme as an “industrial-scale fraud” that exploited a system designed to support vulnerable people.

Authorities are pursuing confiscation proceedings against the convicted gang members, aiming to recover the stolen funds. The government is also introducing new fraud powers to tackle benefit fraud more effectively, potentially saving taxpayers millions of pounds in the coming years.
