A deadly explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has claimed the lives of nine people and injured 26 others
According to the state media reports on Tuesday, the blast occurred around 8:30 a.m. on Monday in a village near Changde, Hunan province, China National Radio (CNR) reported. As of 9 a.m. Tuesday, rescue teams were still working at the site under difficult conditions.
Authorities said the situation on the ground remains dangerous, with the threat of further explosions complicating rescue operations. The factory’s remote mountainous location and lack of nearby water sources have also hindered efforts.
“Rescuers have worked continuously for over 20 hours, using remote-controlled water cannons to suppress the fire,” the report noted.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched a team to the scene to supervise the response and investigate the cause of the blast. According to state-run Xinhua, the ministry stressed the importance of determining the cause quickly and holding those responsible accountable.
China has a long history of industrial accidents, often linked to weak enforcement of safety standards. Just last month, a blast at a chemical plant in Shandong province killed at least five people. One of the deadliest incidents occurred in 2015, when explosions at a chemical warehouse in Tianjin killed more than 170 people and injured hundreds.
