Malala who was shot for trying to get education in 2015 breaks her silence... Says, I fear for my Afghan sisters

Women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai says millions of Afghan women and girls were educated in the last 20 years – but the future they were promised is “dangerously close to slipping away”.

Yousafzai, who was shot in the head by the Taliban in Pakistan in 2015, wrote in a blog for The New York Times: “Like many women, I fear for my Afghan sisters.”

The youngest Nobel Prize Laureate said it reminds her of her own childhood in Pakistan, when the Taliban took over her hometown in 2007 and banned girls from receiving an education.

She wrote in the blog that Afghan girls and young women are where she has been, in despair thinking they might never be allowed to see a classroom or hold a book again.

Given the Taliban’s history of “violently suppressing” women’s rights, she said Afghan women’s fears are “real”.

She said it is not too late to help Afghans, especially women and children, and there need to be specific agreements girls can complete their education, go to university and get jobs.

The campaigner said women and girls are asking for protection, education, freedom and the future they were promised, adding: “We cannot continue to fail them. We have no time to spare.”
