The founder of the World Central Kitchen, José Andrés has declared that Israel targeted staff in Gaza ‘car by car’ in a deliberate attempt to kill.
José Andrés, the founder of World Central Kitchen (WCK), accuses Israeli forces in Gaza of systematically targeting his aid workers “car by car”.
On Monday, seven members of his staff were killed in a strike, which he claims was not a mistake but a deliberate attack. Among the victims were workers from Australia, Canada, Poland, the UK, the US, and a Palestinian colleague.
Israel has apologized for the strike, calling it a “grave mistake”, and promised an independent investigation. The aid convoy, hit while leaving the Deir al-Balah warehouse, had unloaded over 100 tonnes of humanitarian food aid brought to Gaza.
The convoy comprised three vehicles, including two armored ones with the charity’s logo prominently displayed. All three were struck during the attack.
According to José Andrés, this was not an accident but a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The bodies of six of the deceased WCK workers have been repatriated from Gaza to Egypt, while their Palestinian colleague was buried in Rafah. As a result of the incident, humanitarian aid to Gaza is uncertain, with WCK suspending operations and the UN pausing movements at night for evaluation of the security situation.
US President Joe Biden has condemned the strike, urging Israel to deconflict military operations with humanitarian efforts to avoid civilian casualties. Several world leaders have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and called for accountability.
