The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has dismissed two senior officers following a tragic incident in which seven aid workers from World Central Kitchen (WCK) were killed in missile strikes in the Gaza Strip.
An IDF inquiry revealed that drone operators mistakenly targeted WCK vehicles, believing them to be transporting Hamas gunmen. The IDF termed the incident a “grave accident” and admitted to a “serious failure” in following army rules.
In response, two IDF officers were sacked, and three commanders received formal reprimands. Additionally, those responsible for the attack may face criminal prosecution.
The devastating incident occurred on April 1, when three missiles struck the WCK convoy, resulting in the deaths of seven aid workers. The IDF acknowledged that mistakes and miscommunications led to the convoy being targeted.
While the IDF’s internal investigation found various shortcomings, including a lack of visibility of WCK markings on vehicles at night and insufficient evidence to justify the attack, the military unit involved has been suspended from duties.
World Central Kitchen expressed appreciation for the disciplinary actions but called for an independent investigation. The IDF’s preliminary investigation also prompted calls for a criminal inquiry from international leaders, including US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The deaths of the aid workers have intensified global scrutiny of Israel’s conduct during the conflict, with demands for enhanced protection for humanitarian workers and increased aid access to Gaza.
