Jonas Vingegaard, the current Tour de France champion, is in the hospital following a serious crash during stage four of the Tour of the Basque Country.
Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone, several broken ribs, a pulmonary contusion, and a collapsed lung. He is stable and receiving treatment in the hospital.
The crash occurred during a descent around 40 kilometers from the stage’s end, involving other notable riders like Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel.
Evenepoel, also injured in the crash, sustained a fractured collarbone and a fractured right shoulder blade. He will undergo surgery in Belgium.
The crash resulted in various injuries, including spinal fractures for Jay Vine and a concussion with a fractured sternum for Sean Quinn.
Vingegaard’s participation in future races, including defending his Tour de France title, is uncertain due to the severity of his injuries.
