The Nigerian government has announced a new rule for university admissions.
Starting in the 2024/2025 school year, only students who are 18 years old or older can be admitted to universities.
This news was shared by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, at a meeting about admissions to higher education institutions. The meeting was held by JAMB (Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board) in Abuja.
When the Minister announced this, many people in the audience were upset. They showed their disagreement by making noise and interrupting the Minister’s speech.
Prof. Mamman tried to explain the decision. He said it was legal and told people who didn’t like it that they could ask the National Assembly to change the law. He said, “If you want the child to start from four, you can go back to the National Assembly and amend it.”
