The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned the Libyan government for its shameful and inhumane treatment of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s national football team, during their visit for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

In a unanimous resolution, the Senate urged the Libyan authorities to tender an unreserved apology to the Nigerian government and people for the ill-treatment meted out to the team.
The Senate’s condemnation was sparked by a point of order raised by Senator Sumaila Kawu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sports, under Order 42 of the Senate Standing Rules.
Senator Kawu expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as a total disregard for human dignity and international norms.
Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, who presided over the plenary session, echoed Senator Kawu’s sentiments.
He stated that the treatment of the Super Eagles was “terrible and condemnable” and contradicted the spirit of sports, which aims to promote unity, competition, and brotherhood among nations.
Senator Jibrin emphasized Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa and its commitment to diplomacy and friendship. He urged the Libyan authorities to take responsibility for their actions and apologize to the Nigerian government
Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio issued a strong statement condemning the incident. Through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, Akpabio described the mistreatment as “unacceptable” and a breach of international norms.
Akpabio declared solidarity with the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the Nigerian football community. He assured that the Senate would monitor the situation closely and ensure the rights and dignity of Nigerian citizens are protected.
The Senate President demanded:
1. A thorough investigation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Disciplinary Committee.
2. Appropriate sanctions against those responsible.
3. Immediate action from Libyan authorities to investigate and hold accountable those involved.
Akpabio called on the international football community to condemn Libya’s actions and support Nigeria’s demand for justice.
This incident has sparked widespread outrage in Nigeria, with many calling for decisive action against Libya.
The Nigerian government and football authorities are expected to take further steps to address the situation.
