Sanwo-Olu signs Lagos Electricity bill to law

Lagos Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has signed the Lagos Electricity Bill 2024 into law, a comprehensive plan designed to address challenges in the energy sector and promote economic and industrial growth in the state

The governor signed the bill on Tuesday at the Lagos House in Ikeja.

According to the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, “The bill is a major step by the state government to ensure 24-hour electricity supply across the state, following the Federal Government’s approval for states to generate and distribute energy in 2023.”

This move aims to reduce Lagos’s reliance on the national grid.

At the signing ceremony, Sanwo-Olu highlighted the importance of the bill in making Lagos a global city with reliable, uninterrupted power.

In November, the Lagos State Government called for bids from independent power producers and energy solution firms to build gas-fired power plants to help close the state’s electricity gap.

The initiative, designed to improve Lagos’s power supply through the Clean Lagos Electricity Market, was announced by the Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Resources, Biodun Ogunleye, and the Special Adviser for Public-Private Partnerships, Bukola Odoe.
