Tammy Abraham scored a late winner as AC Milan came from two goals down to defeat defending champions Inter Milan 3-2 and claim the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh on Monday
Inter appeared set for a fourth consecutive victory in the competition after Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi found the net either side of halftime in Saudi Arabia.
However, in a repeat of their 2-1 comeback win over Juventus in the semi-finals, Milan returned revitalized after the break.
Inter’s situation worsened when Serie A champions lost Hakan Calhanoglu to a muscle injury just past the half-hour mark, with Kristjan Asllani replacing him.
Theo Hernandez gave Milan hope, scoring a free kick in the 52nd minute as they sought their first trophy under new coach Sergio Conceicao.
Christian Pulisic, the US winger, netted the equalizer with 10 minutes remaining, and English striker Abraham sealed the win with a goal in the 93rd minute. Milan claimed the trophy for the eighth time, their first since 2016.
Inter, the three-time defending champions, had earlier defeated Atalanta 2-0 in the Super Cup semi-finals, held in Saudi Arabia for the third consecutive year.
AC Milan’s eighth Italian Super Cup victory ties them with Inter and leaves them just behind Juventus, who have won the tournament a record nine times.
