‘You’ll return to Nigeria’ – Kenyan aspirant warns Dangote over refinery

Former Kenya Defence Forces officer Patrick Osoi has told Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote not to rush into building his proposed oil refinery in Kenya, saying local business people can handle the project.

Osoi made the statement while addressing supporters at a Lions Movement event, where he spoke about his plan to contest Kenya’s 2027 presidential election.

He said he would prefer Kenyan investors to take charge of the project if he becomes president.

He said:

“I want to tell Aliko Dangote, please don’t rush to start the refinery because, when I’m sworn in as President of Kenya next year, you will be heading back to Nigeria”.

“We Kenyans have business people who can start the refinery. We also have business people in this country who can do that job. This is what we stand for. This is the home of all movements,” Osoi added.

Dangote’s proposed refinery is planned for Lamu, on Kenya’s coast. The project, estimated to cost $16 billion, is designed to process 700,000 barrels of crude oil daily and supply petroleum products to Kenya and other countries in East Africa.

Kenyan President William Ruto and Dangote held the project’s groundbreaking ceremony on September 30, 2026.
