Nigerian footballer Obafemi Martins has come under fire after posting what many perceived as an endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu despite the country’s worsening economic crisis

In the now-deleted Instagram post, Martins shared a picture of Tinubu along with the quote: “It’s easy for those who are greedy to think that change is easy. Change is not about comfort of today, but the success of tomorrow.” Many Nigerians, struggling with inflation and economic hardship, viewed this as an attempt to justify the current situation, sparking widespread criticism.
Martins’ post comes shortly after a controversy involving a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Ushie Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye. She recently went viral after posting a TikTok video in which she slammed Tinubu’s leadership, lamenting that the rising cost of living had made it difficult to survive on her NYSC allowance. She called Tinubu a “terrible leader” and accused the government of failing its citizens.
Following her remarks, Raye was allegedly cautioned and pressured by NYSC officials to take down her video, prompting outrage from many Nigerians. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, along with legal representatives, later accompanied her to the NYSC Local Government Inspector’s office after she was summoned for questioning. Sowore condemned any attempts to silence her, stressing the importance of protecting free speech.
