South Africa’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt after gunmen opened fire on his convoy along the N12 highway near Boksburg in Gauteng
The attack took place as he was returning from an ANC National Executive Committee meeting.
According to his spokesperson, Keith Khoza, Mashatile was inside a bulletproof vehicle at the time of the incident. Initially mistaking the impact for stones, he later realized his car had been hit multiple times by bullets.
The South African Police Service and the Presidential Protection Unit have launched a full investigation, including forensic analysis and the review of CCTV footage, in a bid to identify those responsible.
While the motive behind the attack remains unclear, the incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of senior government officials. Mashatile, seen as a key contender to succeed President Cyril Ramaphosa, has reportedly faced growing internal opposition within the ANC—fueling speculation that the attack could have political undertones.
