In a major diplomatic breakthrough, India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following several days of intense military exchanges

The agreement, reached after high-level talks between military officials from both countries, marks a significant move toward de-escalation in the region.
The ceasefire, which took effect at 5:00 p.m. IST (11:30 a.m. GMT), brings a halt to all military operations by land, air, and sea. It follows a night of heavy cross-border shelling that heightened fears of a wider conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that both sides have committed to upholding the agreement and announced that further talks between military commanders are scheduled for May 12. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar reiterated Islamabad’s dedication to peace and regional stability while reaffirming its stance on national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
News of the ceasefire has been welcomed with relief across both nations, especially in the disputed Kashmir region, where civilians have borne the brunt of recent hostilities. However, the fragile truce was tested within hours, as reports emerged of explosions in Srinagar, raising doubts about the ceasefire’s longevity.
International diplomacy played a pivotal role in reaching the agreement, though claims about who brokered the deal remain contested. U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that American efforts led to the breakthrough, while Pakistan’s Foreign Minister credited multiple nations for their involvement.
Despite the agreement, India has not lifted its existing restrictions on trade and visa services with Pakistan, and the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty remains in place. While the ceasefire includes provisions for broader dialogue, India’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has stated that there are no current plans for further negotiations.
The situation remains tense but cautiously optimistic as both sides prepare for continued discussions.
