Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), succeeding Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who held the position for two years
The announcement was made during the ECOWAS Summit at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where regional leaders gathered to review progress and chart new directions for cooperation.
President Tinubu’s tenure was marked by efforts to deepen economic integration, bolster regional security, and advocate for the return to democratic governance in countries affected by military coups.
Despite earlier speculation that Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had been selected during a closed-door meeting, it was President Bio who was officially handed the baton of leadership.
In his acceptance speech, Bio laid out four major priorities for his term: restoring constitutional order, promoting democracy, enhancing security collaboration, accelerating economic integration, and strengthening the bloc’s institutional credibility.
Tinubu was first elected ECOWAS Chairman on July 9, 2023, in Guinea-Bissau and re-elected a year later in Abuja to continue advancing the bloc’s goals in peace, security, and development.
