This development comes after ASUU’s National President, Prof Chris Piwuna, warned that the union would enforce a no-pay-no-work policy if salary delays continued.

Currently, academic staff at several federal universities have yet to receive their June salaries. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has also issued a warning, threatening to go on strike if their salaries are not paid soon.

At the University of Jos, the local ASUU branch has officially withdrawn its services. Chairman Jurbe Molwus announced the decision, citing a directive from the union’s National Executive Council (NEC), which empowers branches to suspend work if salaries are not paid by the third day of any new month.

According to Molwus, lecturers have boycotted classes and all statutory meetings. He emphasized that if such delays persist, the union will continue to withdraw services, adding that the branch’s strike monitoring team has been activated to ensure total compliance.

Similarly, at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, ASUU members have stayed away from campus, following a memo from the union’s leadership. ASUU ATBU Chairman, Dr Angulu Haruna, criticized the Federal Government’s handling of their payments.

“Usually, our salaries extend into the first week of the next month, but while other government agencies get paid on time, federal universities are left out. When we ask, they claim it’s due to the transition from IPPIS. Clearly, there’s preferential treatment against us,” he said.

At the University of Abuja, skeletal operations were observed as most lecturers stayed off campus, awaiting their June salaries. A lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that many of his colleagues were following NEC’s resolution by staying away from work until payments are made.
