Nollywood actress, Chinyere Wilfred has aired her concern over the increasing number of broken homes and the challenges of raising children in this modern age

With over 30 years of marriage, Wilfred attributes the rise in marital instability to the erosion of traditional values and the growing influence of social media.

In an interview, Wilfred lamented the fleeting nature of modern marriages.

She emphasized the need for couples to work towards building lasting relationships.

On modern parenting, Wilfred stressed the importance of striking a balance between guidance and freedom.

She noted that many African parents often mistake strict discipline for love, which can lead to misunderstandings in the parent-child relationship.

Wilfred shared a personal experience from her series “Sands of Time,” where she realized she was being overly controlling with her children.

The actress advises parents to listen more, trust more, and find a balance between discipline and understanding.

According to Wilfred, parenting has become more complex, but with the right approach, parents can raise well-adjusted children.

She said: Today’s parents are Gen Z. Back in the day, our parents had boundaries

“What we see today is shocking. People get married, you buy aso ebi, and before you blink, boom, they’re divorced. Marriage isn’t a party dress you wear and throw away.”

“While shooting Sands of Time, I saw myself in that character. I didn’t realise I was overreacting with my children until I watched the playback. It hit me, I was being too controlling. I got home and mellowed down, especially with my son. Even now, as a graduate, he still can’t sleep out. I thought I was protecting them, but I was actually overprotecting

“We think we’re loving our children, but sometimes, we’re stifling them. Sands of Time is more than a series, it’s a conversation starter. It teaches us to listen more, to trust more, and to breathe.

“Parenting has become more complex, but the key is balance between guidance and freedom, discipline and understanding.”
