Bashir El-Rufai, son of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has weighed in on the resurfacing debate surrounding his father’s detention in Anambra State during the 2013 governorship election
His reaction followed activist Aisha Yesufu’s appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, July 21, where she clarified that the arrest was carried out by the Department of State Services (DSS) and not ordered by then-Governor Peter Obi.
Yesufu stated that security operatives acted independently due to prevailing conditions at the time and that linking Obi to the incident was “misleading.” Her remarks came after Edo State Commissioner for Information, Paul Ohonbamu, cited the 2013 arrest to back Governor Monday Okpebholo’s recent warning for Obi to steer clear of Edo State matters.
Despite Yesufu’s clarification, Bashir El-Rufai maintained that Obi was responsible for his father’s arrest. Responding on social media, he wrote, “He did & he is forgiven.”
The incident in question took place in November 2013, when Nasir El-Rufai, then an APC chieftain, visited Anambra to monitor the governorship election. He was detained by DSS operatives at his hotel in Awka. The DSS later said the move was due to “security concerns,” while El-Rufai insisted he was unjustly targeted.
