The Senate on Wednesday welcomed four senators who officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), further strengthening the ruling party’s control of the upper chamber

The defectors include Senator Ekong Samson (Akwa Ibom South), Senator Etim Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East), Senator Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), and Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central).
To mark the occasion, the Senate suspended its rules to admit several high-profile APC members, including the party’s National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, Osun State APC Chairman Tajudeen Lawal, ex-Minister Chris Ngige, and some members of the House of Representatives.
With these additions, the APC now commands 72 seats in the 10th Senate—up from the 50 it held at the start of the Assembly in June 2023. In contrast, the PDP’s representation has dropped to 26, following a string of defections within its ranks, as well as from the Labour Party and NNPP.
Reacting to the development, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the wave of defections as a clear sign of democratic engagement and momentum.
“It’s not just about the numbers. We are committed to ensuring our members and stakeholders remain true to the ideals of the APC. We’re doing all we can to move Nigeria forward,” he said.
