British actor David Jonsson has officially been announced as the next star to carry the Black Panther legacy in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, becoming the first actor to take on the role since Chadwick Boseman’s de.ath
The reveal was made during Marvel Studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, where the studio also confirmed that Black Panther 3 is scheduled for release on December 15, 2028.
32-year-old Jonsson has been cast as Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint, the son of T’Challa and Nakia, portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o. The character, who first appeared as a young boy in the closing moments of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), will now take centre stage as the story follows his journey into adulthood.
The British actor has recently gained recognition for his performances in Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, the BBC/HBO series Industry, and the critically acclaimed film Rye Lane.
Boseman, who originated the role of T’Challa, d!ed in 2020 at the age of 43 following a private battle with colon cancer.
Rather than recast the character immediately, Marvel chose to continue the franchise with Letitia Wright’s Shuri becoming the new Black Panther in Wakanda Forever.
For the upcoming sequel, Wright and Winston Duke are expected to reprise their roles as Shuri and M’Baku, while Denzel Washington will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in a role that has yet to be announced.
