The Federal Government has praised the six-year jail sentence handed to Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed pro-Biafra agitator, describing it as a landmark development in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism.

Ekpa was convicted on Monday by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland for terrorism-related offenses.

In a statement, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris said the judgment not only brings justice to countless Nigerians affected by Ekpa’s actions but also strengthens Nigeria-Finland relations.

“For years, Ekpa’s reckless incitement and orchestration of violence through IPOB terror activities unleashed unspeakable pain on Nigeria,” the statement read. “Families shattered, businesses destroyed, children orphaned, and entire communities forced to live under fear. Hundreds of lives were lost, and many more maimed, in pursuit of a destructive and unlawful agenda that sought to undermine the peace, unity, and sovereignty of our nation.”

The minister commended the Finnish judiciary for upholding the rule of law, noting that the verdict sends a strong message to extremists that justice will always prevail.

He reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s resolve to defend Nigeria’s sovereignty, pledging to continue mobilizing diplomatic, military, and judicial resources to safeguard peace and unity. Idris urged those influenced by Ekpa and his associates to renounce violence and embrace peace.

The government also expressed gratitude to the National Security Adviser, the Armed Forces, security agencies, the Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police for their sacrifices and courage in confronting terrorism.

“As we mark this turning point, the Federal Government enjoins all Nigerians, at home and abroad, to work together for national unity, peace, and security of the country,” the statement concluded.
