The U.S. Embassy in Nigeria has addressed concerns over the non-refundable nature of U.S. visa fees, explaining that the policy is consistent with global standards

The embassy noted that visa fees cover the cost of processing applications, regardless of whether they are approved.

Responding to ongoing public debates about transparency and fairness in U.S. immigration procedures, the Mission reassured Nigerians that every application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly.

“We hear your concerns regarding U.S. visa application fees. Like most countries, U.S. visa fees cover the cost of processing the application, regardless of the outcome. While fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, each application is reviewed thoroughly and fairly,” the embassy stated on its X account on Tuesday.

The Mission advised applicants to prepare their submissions carefully and shared guidelines to help avoid visa denial, revocation, or cancellation. Applicants are urged to schedule their visa interviews at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in their country of residence or nationality.

Effective immediately, individuals applying for F, M, or J nonimmigrant visas are required to set all social media accounts to “public” to support vetting processes necessary to verify identity and admissibility to the United States.

Additionally, the Mission highlighted the Presidential Proclamation taking effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time on June 9, 2025, which restricts entry and visa issuance for nationals of certain countries. Applicants affected by this proclamation may still submit applications and attend interviews but could be ineligible for visa issuance or U.S. entry.

The Mission encouraged applicants to use resources available on its website for guidance.

Recall that in April 2025, the embassy revised visa interview requirements for Nigerian applicants. All attendees in Abuja and Lagos must present a DS-160 visa application form with a confirmation barcode starting with “AA” followed by two zeroes. The barcode must match the one used to schedule the online interview; failure to do so will result in disqualification.
