Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, Garba Muhammad, has revealed that the National Assembly has received direct threats from terrorists to bomb the legislative complex
Garba made the disclosure during a public hearing on a bill seeking to establish the Legislative Security Directorate, a new agency designed to strengthen security management and safeguard lawmakers, staff, and visitors within the National Assembly.

According to him, the complex has been grappling with multiple security issues, including cases of car and motorcycle theft, vandalism, the use of fake identification cards, and infiltration by unregistered visitors.
He recalled a previous incident on May 4, 2021, when lawmakers were warned of a planned Boko Haram attack on the National Assembly and other high-profile targets in Abuja — a threat that led to restricted access and calls for tighter security around federal institutions.
Garba urged immediate reinforcement of the National Assembly’s security architecture, stressing that any lapse could disrupt legislative operations.
“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly. Legislators are exposed to threats from constituents and others who gain easy access to their offices without formal appointments.
“It is clear that with the current security challenges, failure to take proper measures could paralyze legislative activities. If activities are halted, there will be no representation, no oversight, no annual budget, no plenary — and that would destabilize democracy, the legislative process, and the nation at large.”
