Former Abia State governor and Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, has alleged that the recent surge in k!llings and abductions across Nigeria is being orchestrated by politicians aiming to destabilise President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Kalu claimed the pattern of attacks points to a deliberate political agenda rather than random criminality. He suggested that unnamed sponsors are intent on undermining Tinubu, just as they allegedly sought to weaken former President Goodluck Jonathan.
“What we are seeing is always a routine, something that goes with the elections. When you have an election, people will try to pressure the government in power for all kinds of things to start happening. And you can remember when President Jonathan was here, a similar thing happened,” Kalu said.
The senator further alleged that both local actors and foreign interests are fuelling banditry and terrorism to create instability. “The terrorists and the bandits are orchestrated by some members of the international community and local people who really want to destabilise the government,” he said.
He maintained that the security challenges are linked to political manoeuvring ahead of upcoming elections, noting that the current wave of attacks mirrors past periods when insecurity was deliberately heightened to weaken the government.
Despite his warnings, Kalu expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s handling of the crisis, highlighting that the President had cancelled official engagements to focus on national security following several high-profile abductions. “For the first time, you see the president cancelling all his engagements. Today is Sunday, and he faced security challenges. He faced everything about security,” he said.
Kalu assured Nigerians that the government is actively working to rescue abducted victims, including recently kidnapped schoolgirls, adding, “Those girls will be recovered. The government is making every effort to make sure these people are recovered.”
He praised the military and security agencies for their full deployment to restore calm, acknowledging the dedication of service chiefs and operatives in addressing the crisis.
