Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates have entered into a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) that will remove tariffs on more than 7,000 Nigerian goods exported to the UAE, significantly strengthening trade ties between both countries

The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi after negotiations led by the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, with the minister and Nigeria’s chief negotiator, Dr Jumoke Oduwole, spearheading the process, according to a statement from the State House.

With the deal now in effect, a wide range of Nigerian agricultural and manufactured products — including fish and seafood, oilseeds, cereals, cotton, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals — will enjoy immediate duty-free entry into the UAE market.

Tariffs on other Nigerian exports such as machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, clothing, and furniture are expected to be eliminated gradually over the next three to five years.

Beyond trade in goods, the CEPA also opens doors for Nigerian companies to set up branches, subsidiaries, and corporate entities in the UAE. Nigerian business visitors will be allowed to stay in the country for up to 90 days within a year to explore trade and investment opportunities, while intra-company staff such as executives, managers, and specialists can relocate under renewable three-year permits.

On the investment side, the agreement is designed to tackle long-standing obstacles to foreign direct investment by offering clearer rules and stronger protections for UAE investors interested in Nigeria’s key productive sectors.
