The law firm representing Sophia Momodu has publicly addressed what it described as hostile online remarks allegedly made by Afrobeats star Davido amid their ongoing custody dispute.
In a statement shared on the firm’s official Instagram page, Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors expressed concern over what it called inflammatory comments directed at its partner, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Egeonu Enedah, who is acting as counsel to Sophia in the matter currently before a Lagos court.
The firm stressed that the case remains before a court of competent jurisdiction in Lagos State and emphasized that the outcome will be determined strictly by evidence and legal principles not by public commentary or social media pressure.
While noting that it would not address the details of the case due to its pending status, the firm made it clear that any attempt to intimidate or harass legal practitioners for performing their duties would be strongly resisted.
Below is the full press statement released by the firm:
“WE STAND RESOLUTE IN THE PURSUIT OF JUSTICE
Our attention has been drawn to all manner of inflammatory public statements chiefly engineered by a Nigerian Afrobeats artiste, via social media directed at our Partner, Mrs Ebelechukwu Egeonu Enedah arising from her professional conduct in a custody matter presently pending before a court of competent jurisdiction in Lagos State.
That matter is sub judice. It will be decided by the court alone, on evidence and law, and no amount of media commentary will sway that process or our approach to the case. In keeping with the highest professional conduct, no statements on the substance of the case will be issued by us.
However, if legal practitioners are to be threatened, intimidated, or exposed to harassment outside the courtroom for asking questions, testing evidence, or discharging their professional duty to their clients, then the very foundation of justice is imperiled. The administration of justice depends upon fearless advocacy.
When counsel is forced to weigh personal safety against professional duty, the rule of law itself is weakened.
It will not begin with us.
Punuka Attorneys & Solicitors will deploy every lawful measure available to it to resist any attempt to intimidate counsel or interfere with judicial proceedings. Those who engage in conduct calculated to interfere with the administration of justice will be met with the full consequences provided by law.
We call upon the Nigerian Bar Association and lawyers globally to rise up in one voice to condemn this aberration and gross violation of our profession.
Signed
Management and Board of Partners”.
The statement concludes with a call for solidarity within the legal community, urging the Nigerian Bar Association and lawyers worldwide to speak out against what the firm described as a serious violation of professional standards.
The custody matter between Sophia Momodu and Davido remains ongoing.
