Senator Kenneth Eze, who represents Ebonyi Central under the APC, has proposed replacing Nigeria’s current two-term, four-year presidential structure with a single 16-year tenure
The lawmaker, who chairs the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, shared his position while speaking with journalists at his country home in Ohigbo-Amagu, Ezza South Local Government Area.

Eze argued that the existing four-year cycle disrupts long-term planning and weakens policy continuity.
“Every four years, we return to campaign mode. By the third year, governance slows as attention shifts to re-election; that is why projects are abandoned, and policies are not allowed to mature.
“Nigeria’s constitution provides for a four-year presidential term, renewable once, but if you ask me, I will advocate one tenure of 16 years. It sounds controversial, but it will allow policies to run their full course and stabilise the system,” Eze said.
He maintained that the suggestion should be seen as part of a broader governance debate rather than an attempt to undermine democratic principles.
According to him, the proposal calls for a comprehensive national discussion on constitutional reforms to assess whether a longer, single tenure could enhance policy implementation while still maintaining democratic safeguards and institutional checks.
