Governor Abba Yusuf has explained that his move from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was driven by the need to connect Kano State more closely with the Federal Government and fast-track development

The governor made the remarks on Monday during the 2026 Grand Rally held at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, according to a statement released by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa.

Yusuf said Kano is too significant politically and economically to remain distanced from the centre of power, stressing that the decision was taken in the interest of the state’s future.

“It is about placing Kano in a position where it can fully participate in national development and secure a better future for its citizens,” he stated, adding that the move reflects his responsibility to the people.

He also said the state must key into President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, noting that ongoing reforms at the federal level require cooperation and proper implementation to deliver results.

“With the support of our great party and the cooperation of the Federal Government, Kano State is better positioned to move forward with confidence and stability,” Yusuf added.

The governor had earlier resigned from the NNPP in January before officially defecting to the APC. In a letter dated January 25 and addressed to the chairman of the Diso-Chiranchi Ward in Gwale Local Government Area, he cited internal crises and prolonged legal battles within the party.

“I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party,” he wrote.

He explained that persistent leadership disputes and court cases had deepened divisions, concluding that stepping away was necessary.

“After careful reflection, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he stated.

His exit triggered a wave of resignations, with 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, including Speaker Ismail Falgore, leaving the NNPP. Eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen in the state also dumped the party.

At the rally, Yusuf expressed appreciation to Vice President Kashim Shettima and governors from Jigawa, Sokoto, Kaduna, Katsina, Borno, Yobe and Plateau states for their presence. He also thanked former APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, Kano APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, and members of the National and State Assemblies for their backing.

APC National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, called on party faithful to rally behind the governor.

“The turnout today demonstrates that Kano APC members are united, enthusiastic, and committed to advancing the party’s agenda and supporting President Tinubu’s vision,” he said.
