BREAKING: Tinubu signs Electoral Bill into law

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday signed the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment) into law, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission unveiled the timetable for the 2027 general elections

The signing ceremony was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, around 5:00 pm, with principal officers of the National Assembly in attendance. The National Assembly had approved the bill just a day earlier, on Tuesday.

The amendment has reignited discussions over the electronic transmission of election results. Civil society organizations and some opposition figures have long advocated for real-time transmission from polling units to INEC’s central server, arguing it would reduce manipulation and boost credibility.

Last week, protesters disrupted the National Assembly complex to demand live transmission, pointing to failures during the 2023 elections when INEC’s Results Viewing Portal collapsed, fueling allegations of rigging.

While the ruling All Progressives Congress backs the use of technology, some stakeholders insist that regions with weak telecommunications infrastructure may need a phased or hybrid system, allowing manual collation where electronic systems fail.

The 2027 general elections are slated for February 20 for the Presidential and National Assembly polls, with Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections scheduled for March 6.
