Gunmen have adopted six worshippers at a church in Ondo state
The church, Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Uso, Owo Local Government Area, was raided in the early hours of Wednesday. Six worshippers were abducted during the night service.
The attack occurred around 12:50 a.m., when church members were holding an early-morning prayer session. Witnesses said the assailants fired sporadically to scatter the congregation before forcibly taking the victims to an unknown location.
Confirming the incident, Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer Jimoh Abayomi said security operatives were promptly deployed after receiving a distress call. “Upon receiving the report at about 12:50 a.m., operatives of the command, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups, mobilised to the scene and commenced coordinated rescue operations,” he said.
Abayomi added that the operation had so far rescued one of the abducted worshippers and led to the arrest of a suspect. “As a result of sustained joint efforts, one of the kidnapped victims has been successfully rescued. Additionally, one suspect linked to the incident has been arrested and has made useful statements that are assisting ongoing investigations,” he stated.
He reassured the public that security forces are continuing their efforts to free the remaining victims and apprehend all other perpetrators. “Security operations are ongoing to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining victims and the apprehension of all perpetrators involved,” Abayomi said.
“Residents are urged to remain calm, vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible and actionable information that may assist ongoing operations,” he added.
