FG orders airport to resume hybrid payment system

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development has announced the return of a hybrid payment system at airport access gates nationwide, following the suspension of the full cashless system that caused traffic congestion at some airports

Starting Friday, March 13, 2026, both cash and electronic payments will be accepted at all airport access points, the minister confirmed.

The decision follows a review meeting between the minister, officials from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and senior ministry staff to assess the initial rollout of the cashless system and the operational challenges it created.

The full cashless system had previously been suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after it led to significant gridlock at airport entrances.

In the long term, the minister said the ministry will work with concessionaires to introduce a fully automated electronic payment system at all airport gates, with the goal of eventually phasing out cash payments entirely.

Motorists who already hold FAAN Go Cashless Cards can continue using them, while other electronic payment options, including POS terminals and approved digital channels, will also remain available.

The minister encouraged the public and road users to obtain and use the FAAN Go Cashless Card as the authority continues efforts to improve and streamline the cashless payment system.

He noted that the directive restores the previous payment arrangement at airport gates while paving the way for a fully automated system across Nigeria’s airports.
