Tajudeen Baruwa, leader of a faction in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has been arrested by the police hours after he and his supporters took over the union’s national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, March 23, 2026
The takeover is part of a long-standing leadership dispute within the NURTW.
Baruwa’s faction stormed the headquarters in the early hours, displacing members loyal to Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, who was elected National President in November 2024.

Court rulings, including those from the National Industrial Court and upheld by higher courts, have reportedly recognized Baruwa as the legitimate leader, prompting his faction to reclaim the secretariat.
Baruwa’s supporters maintained that the operation was lawful, conducted with prior notifications to security agencies and backed by court orders affirming his leadership. A video circulating online shows scenes from the takeover.
Following the incident, police intervened and arrested Baruwa.
The NURTW has long been affected by factional disputes, often sparking tensions over control of the influential transport workers’ union.

Baruwa did not work for this government. It was not baruwa who put his name and career on the line when Mc Oluomo openly declared for Tinubu and told igbos they must vote for Tinubu in Lagos. You can’t reap where you did not sow. As long as tinubu is in office Mc will be there. Its politics
