JUST IN: ADC demands resignation of INEC Chairman, Amupitan

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has demanded the resignation of Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), accusing the commission of bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Thursday, Senator David Mark condemned INEC’s recent actions, including the derecognition of ADC leadership, and said the party has lost confidence in the electoral body.

“We demand the immediate resignation or removal of the INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan, and all the National Commissioners. We no longer have confidence in them. We are convinced that they are incapable of conducting any credible election,” Mark stated.

He added that the ADC would continue its party programmes despite INEC’s stance, noting that the law does not make the commission’s presence a mandatory requirement. “We have duly served INEC notice, and we will proceed accordingly,” he said.

Mark also called on the international community to take note of INEC’s April 1 actions and urged them to recognise the threat to Nigeria’s democracy and stability, stressing the need to hold accountable those undermining the electoral process.

He concluded with a rallying call to Nigerians: “We call on Nigerians to defend our democracy. This is a defining moment. Stand firm. Speak out. Participate. Resist any attempt to impose a one-party state on Nigeria. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and together, we must protect it.”
