Gunmen suspected to be terrorists launched a deadly attack on Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area during Easter celebrations, targeting two Christian worship centres and killing no fewer than seven people while abducting several others
The assault, which happened in the early hours of Sunday, left residents in fear and confusion.

Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward where Ariko is located, confirmed the incident in a phone conversation, stating that the affected churches were First ECWA Church and St. Augustine Catholic Church.
“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources said seven persons were killed, while others claimed eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” he said.
Bawa explained that limited network coverage in the area may have contributed to the delayed response, giving the attackers enough time to operate freely.
“The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting sporadically at worshippers. Several people were killed, and many others were taken away into the bush,” he added.
Residents revealed that the assailants remained in the community for an extended period without any resistance, heightening concerns over the security challenges facing rural settlements in the state.
