Cross River denies report of 10 new COVID-19 cases

The Cross River State Government has rejected reports claiming there are 10 new symptomatic COVID-19 cases in the state, describing the information as misleading and inaccurate, and insisting that only one confirmed case has been recorded

The clarification comes after a national newspaper publication suggested that additional individuals showing COVID-19 symptoms had been detected, sparking public concern over a possible resurgence of infections in various communities.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, had earlier confirmed a COVID-19 case involving a Chinese national working in the state, who is currently receiving treatment and reportedly responding positively.

In a statement released on Thursday in Calabar, Ayuk restated that as of April 23, 2026, the state was still managing just one confirmed COVID-19 case, with no new confirmed or suspected cases identified.

He explained that the 10 persons mentioned in the report were actually contacts of the confirmed case, stressing that contact tracing is a routine public health procedure used to prevent possible spread.

According to him, the individuals are not exhibiting symptoms and do not qualify as suspected cases. He added that they are currently observing home isolation and are being closely monitored by health officials on a daily basis.

Ayuk further clarified that the isolation arrangement is a precautionary measure and should not be misinterpreted as evidence of new infections, reaffirming that no additional COVID-19 cases have been recorded in the state.
