The All Progressives Congress has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over remarks made at an opposition gathering in Ibadan, warning that his comments could inflame tensions
In a statement released by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party accused Makinde of invoking the violent legacy of “Operation Wetie” in a manner it described as dangerous, especially in the context of claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party system.

The APC argued that such references were inappropriate for a sitting governor tasked with maintaining peace and security, stating that the comments could be interpreted as a threat capable of destabilising the country.
According to the party, Makinde’s remarks should not be dismissed as routine political opposition, warning they could trigger unrest and lawlessness if left unchecked.
The party also called on security and intelligence agencies to take the situation seriously and act swiftly to prevent any breakdown of order, urging them to protect lives, property, and the nation’s democratic system.
It further stressed that holding public office does not exempt anyone from accountability in matters concerning national security, insisting that no individual should make statements that could endanger citizens.
Beyond the criticism, the APC dismissed opposition claims that Nigeria is sliding into a one-party state, describing such narratives as exaggerated and rooted in internal crises within opposition ranks, including leadership struggles, factional disputes, and lack of internal cohesion.
